About South Pacific the Musical

Based on a Pulitzer Prize winning book, South Pacific was nominated for ten Tony Awards and naturally won all of them. South Pacific is one of the greatest Broadway musicals in history. Brought to life by Rodgers and Hammerstein, the musical eventually spawned the 1958 film starring Rossano Brazzi and Mitzi Gaynor.
The musical is based on James A. Michener’s book, Tales of the South Pacific.
The story takes place during World War II in the South Pacific and tells two love stories. One is of Nellie, an optimistic nurse, and Emile, a French plantation owner with two bi-racial children from a previous marriage. The other is of Luther Billis, a restless American sailor, and Liat, a native Vietnamese daughter of “Bloody Mary” the local grass-skirt seller. Both couples deal with the issue of racial prejudice as Billis and Nellie cannot overcome their bigotry in becoming involved with a native. Set in wartime, the couples are forced into life or death situations, causing both to realize that the issues of race are not as important as life itself.
