Louisiana Superdome Information
The Louisiana Superdome (also known as the Superdome) is home to the New Orleans Saints. However, it is also used by a number of sports teams and hosts many major events. Its construction began in 1971 and the official opening was in August of 1975 with a capacity to seat 63,525 fans.
This stadium was closed for one year in 2005 – 2006 after Hurricane Katrina extensively damaged the entire city of New Orleans and also the stadium. At that time it also served as a home for around 30,000 people who were left without a home after Katrina. The reopening was a widely publicized event that was accompanied by concerts and famous guests.
Before and after Hurricane Katrina, Louisiana Superdome was host to several major events for various types of sports and leagues. The NFL Super Bowl was held here six times throughout the years, one of the biggest events in American football. It also hosts the following NCAA events: New Orleans Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Tulane Green Wave, Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament and BCS Nation Championship Games. From 1975 – 1979 the New Orleans Jazz, an NBA team, also called the Louisiana Superdome home. Wrestling has also been a part of the Dome's events.
