Founded in 1906 in Newton, North Carolina, the Catawba College Indians now call Salisbury home. The program made early national noise with back-to-back Tangerine Bowl victories, 31-6 over Maryville on January 1, 1947, then 7-0 over Marshall in 1948. Under legendary coach Gordon Kirkland, whose name graces Kirkland Field, Catawba built a winning identity that continued with South Atlantic Conference championships in 1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2007 and 2015.

Game days at Shuford Stadium, capacity 4,000 with room for 5,000, feel personal and electric. Students crowd the railings, alumni gather for relaxed tailgates, and annual showdowns with Lenoir-Rhyne and Carson-Newman sharpen the noise. Whether you remember Lee Spears’ bowl-winning plunge or a recent SAC title run, Catawba’s community-first atmosphere turns every Saturday into a vivid memory.
