Born in 1968 in Marshall, Minnesota, Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs football brings Division II energy to the NSIC each fall. The Mustangs earned the program’s first and only conference crown in 1990 and advanced to the NAIA playoffs, a high-water mark under head coach Gary Buer. Another signature moment arrived in 2013, when SMSU reached the Mineral Water Bowl and set the NSIC single-season total offense record. Home Saturdays unfold at Mattke Field at the Schwan Regional Event Center, an on-campus venue opened in 2008 and refreshed with new turf for a fast, fan-friendly game. Students, alumni, and the Marshall community pack the stands, gather for easygoing tailgates, and make noise that carries across Stadium Drive. If you’re chasing the next vivid memory, Mustang game day is where it can happen.
