Founded in 1899 in Richmond, Virginia, the Virginia Union Panthers football program channels more than a century of HBCU pride into today's NCAA Division II stage. The Panthers compete in the CIAA and call on-campus Hovey Field home, where capacity crowds and a close-to-the-action layout make every snap feel urgent. Virginia Union has stacked numerous CIAA titles and earned multiple NCAA Division II playoff berths, including breakthrough postseason wins in 2024.

Icons fuel the tradition, from College Football Hall of Famer Joe Taylor on the sideline to Cowboys Pro Bowler Herb Scott in the trenches. The annual clash with nearby Virginia State turns Richmond into a weeklong celebration of Panther spirit. Expect lively tailgating, a thunderous drumline, and a student section awash in maroon and gray. If you love high-level football with community heartbeat, Saturdays at Hovey Field deliver.
