Born in 1942 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Winston-Salem State Rams football brings HBCU pride to NCAA Division II Saturdays. The Rams have captured numerous CIAA championships and surged to the 2012 NCAA Division II national championship game, a season led by coach Connell Maynor and packed Bowman Gray Stadium crowds. Alumni like Yancey Thigpen, Timmy Newsome and pass rusher William Hayes carried Ram grit to the NFL, while legendary coach Bill Hayes set a winning standard at Bill Hayes Field inside Bowman Gray. Game days feel different here: a racetrack circles the turf, tailgates fire early, and the Red Sea of Sound ignites the student section from pregame to the final horn. If you love big plays, tradition and an electric HBCU atmosphere, Rams football belongs on your live-event list.
