Born in 1946 in Houston, Texas, the Cougars turn Saturdays at TDECU Stadium into a citywide celebration. The Spirit of Houston sets the tempo, the student section stays loud from kickoff, and Shasta rallies the crowd as fans flash the Cougar Paw and trade the Whose House? Coogs House! call. Tailgates ring the venue and keep the red wave rolling well before the team hits the field.

On the field, Houston’s resume spans Southwest Conference crowns in 1976, 1978 and 1979, the American Athletic Conference championship in 2015, and memorable bowl wins in the 1977 and 1980 Cotton Bowls plus the 2015 Peach Bowl. Heisman Trophy winner Andre Ware and record-setting passer Case Keenum carry the program’s legacy, alongside coach Bill Yeoman’s innovative Veer. The crosstown Bayou Bucket with Rice adds extra edge.
