Born in 1892 in Orono, Maine, Maine Black Bears football represents the University of Maine with a blue-collar edge. Competing in the Coastal Athletic Association, the Black Bears have stacked multiple league crowns, most recently in 2013 and 2018, and punched the program’s first FCS semifinal ticket in 2018. Earlier eras delivered Atlantic 10 titles in 2001 and 2002, proof that Maine regularly muscles into the national conversation.

Rivalry week ignites with New Hampshire in the Battle for the Brice-Cowell Musket, a tradition that electrifies the state line. Home Saturdays at Morse Field at Alfond Stadium feel intimate and loud, from tailgates under the pines to the band leading the Maine Stein Song while Bananas T. Bear works along the sidelines. Alumni like Patrick Ricard, Mike DeVito, and coach Jack Cosgrove keep the standard high.
