Rooted in Pittsburgh since 1890, Pitt Panthers Football has helped shape the sport with nine national championships, capped by the 1976 crown led by Heisman Trophy winner Tony Dorsett. The program has stacked conference success too, including the 2021 ACC Championship, and memorable postseason moments like Sugar Bowl victories in 1977 and 1982. Quarterback Dan Marino added star power in the early 1980s, launching big-play offenses that kept Pitt in the national conversation.

On fall Saturdays, Acrisure Stadium comes alive along the North Shore as the Panther Pitt student section, blue-and-gold tailgates, and the Hail to Pitt fight song fuel a charged, welcoming atmosphere. After wins, Victory Lights illuminate the Cathedral of Learning, extending the celebration across the city and uniting fans in the heart of Pittsburgh.
