Founded in 1889 in Vermillion, the South Dakota Coyotes suit up inside the DakotaDome, where the roar carries and the Coyote Crazies set the tone. Pregame starts at Coyote Tailgate Nation and spikes during Dakota Days, turning campus into a weeklong celebration of school pride.

On the field, South Dakota boasts multiple conference crowns, a trip to the 1986 Division II national championship game, and a breakthrough 2024 season that delivered the program’s first Missouri Valley title and an FCS semifinal run. The annual South Dakota Showdown against South Dakota State keeps the state buzzing, no matter the records. Fans still swap stories about quarterback Chris Streveler’s 2017 heroics and NFL lineman Tom Compton’s dominance up front, reminders that Vermillion is a place where big moments meet loyal fans.
