Founded in 1903 in Macomb, Illinois, the Western Illinois Leathernecks boast a singular nickname granted by U.S. Marine Corps great Ray 'Rock' Hanson, reflecting the program’s discipline and pride. On the field, WIU has stacked conference titles and made multiple NCAA Division I FCS playoff runs, including quarterfinal appearances that put Macomb on the national map. Alumni like linebacker Bryan Cox, plus coaches Randy Ball and Bob Nielson, helped shape a tough, fast identity. Fans pack Hanson Field, where the Marching Leathernecks drive the rhythm, purple and gold tailgates ring the stadium, and annual in-state tilts with Illinois State and Southern Illinois add extra juice. Expect a friendly, high-energy crowd and authentic traditions that turn every Saturday into a vivid memory.
