Orange Bowl Background Ticket Information

The Orange Bowl is a college football game held every year; usually - on the first of January in Miami, Florida. The first game was played in 1935 at one of the stadiums in Miami. Since 1996, it moved to another stadium, situated in Miami Gardens. The main sponsor of the games is FedEx (formerly Federal Express) and since 1989 the official title is the FedEx Orange Bowl.

The participants of the first game were Bucknell and Miami. There was only a bit more that 5 thousand spectators who did not buy the tickets because the entrance was free of charge. Each team earned only twelve thousand dollars but in was the beginning of a great history of the Orange Bowl.

In two years a special committee with its officers was elected. According to the charter, the Orange Bowl was a non-profit organization and established the sum of 750 thousand US dollars to be the biggest amount to be taken home by the participants.

In 1936 the number of spectators grew up to almost 7 thousand people. A popular sportscaster, Ted Husing, was invited to broadcast the game.

The story of the Orange Bowl is connected with the name of Earnie Seiler whos sometimes called mad genius. Many innovations are closely linked to the name of this man. He came up with the idea to hold the Bowl on the New Years Day to be able to capture prime time audience.

The Orange Bowl became even more prestigious. Seiler was one of the founding members and became general manager in 1939. He always said that the main thing was the recognition of the Orange Bowl. And the most important thing for him was to draw more and more famous football teams.

The Orange Bowl gradually became the main place to celebrate the first day of January, the New Years spare afternoon. Such teams as Nebraska and Alabama were also invited to the party. The number spectators who were buying tickets to the game became enormous – 80 thousand people! (this is 16 times as more in comparison with 5 thousand spectators in 1935). Even the most famous coaches of that time, Bob Devaney and Bear Bryant, were drawn to the tournament.
