Elizabeth City State Vikings football has energized Elizabeth City, North Carolina since 1938. Competing in the CIAA, the Vikings captured the 1971 conference championship 33-22 over Winston-Salem State, and later reached the NCAA Division II playoffs in 2006 and 2011 under coach Waverly Tillar, with additional title-game trips in 2006, 2008 and 2012. NFL standouts like defensive tackle Jethro Pugh and receiver Reggie Langhorne trace their roots to ECSU, adding legacy to a program built for big moments.
