Founded in 1940 in Lake Charles, the McNeese State Cowboys have built a proud FCS tradition anchored at Cowboy Stadium, nicknamed the Hole, where blue and gold rules every Saturday. The Pokes compete in the Southland Conference and turn crisp fall nights into can’t-miss football, fueled by a fan base that shows up early and stays loud.

McNeese has stacked conference championships and reached the FCS national championship game in 1997 and 2002. Standouts like first round NFL pick Leonard Smith and dynamic quarterback Kerry Joseph helped raise the program’s profile, while annual showdowns with Lamar and Nicholls keep the stakes high. Tailgating circles the stadium, the Spirit of McNeese band sets the tempo, and a spirited student section makes the Hole one of Louisiana’s most electric game day settings.
