Transfer Holton Eligible for Mountaineers
While much uncertainty surrounded the eligibility of star transfer Jonathan Holton over the summer, he has officially been added to the West Virginia basketball roster ahead of the 2013-14 season. Holton had a remarkable freshman season at Rhode Island from 2011-12, averaging 10.2 points and 8.1 rebounds per game for the Rams en route to being named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team. The power forward’s rebounding and scoring abilities will be very valuable for the Mountaineers—their top returning rebounder hauled in just 4.4 boards per game, and their best scorer last season averaged less than 10 points per game. Holton will pair up in the post with another first-time Mountaineer, as 6-foot-8, 230-pound freshman Devin Williams figures to see plenty of minutes in the frontcourt, creating a dynamic low-post presence that WVU was lacking last season.
Whereas the frontcourt is full of newcomers, the backcourt is an experienced unit that could be one of the best in the Big 12. Eron Harris was the team’s go-to option last season, averaging 9.8 points per game, while Terry Henderson averaged 8.0 points per game and spread the floor for the team by knocking down 40% of his three-point field goals.
