Founded in 1934 in Silver City, Western New Mexico Mustangs football brings Division II grit to Ben Altamirano Field. The Mustangs captured the 1970 RMAC Mountain Division title and, after years of rebuilding, snapped a three-decade drought with a 6-5 finish in 2022. Rivalries drive the season: the annual Chile Bowl with Eastern New Mexico and La Batalla against New Mexico Highlands, where the Warrior’s Helmet is on the line, keep stakes high every fall. Alumni like NFL tight end Richard Angulo and influential early head coach Raymond Brancheau helped shape the program’s identity. On Saturdays, the 3,000-seat Altamirano setting feels uniquely intimate, with lively tailgates, a close-to-the-action student section, and crisp high-desert evenings that make every snap pop. Join the Mustangs faithful and make a vivid memory in Silver City.
