George Michael Background Information
George Michael, also known as Georgio-Kyriacos-Panayiotou, was born in East Finchley, North London. In his early life, he lived mostly in East Finchley, but moved to Radlett to go to Bushey Meads School. George Michael?s career began when he organized a ska band that was called The Executive.
In 1981, Michael achieved even more success. When he and his best friend, Andrew Ridgeley, created a duo called Wham! The group released their first album entitled Fantastic. The duo?s album went straight to the top of the charts in the U.K. A year later they released Wham Rap! (Enjoy What You Do?), the duo?s first debut single. Their second single was even more successful, ranking number 1 on the U.K.?s Top 10 hits. Michael and Ridgeley?s second album Make It Big sold 6 million copies in just the U.S.
In 1987, George Michael became a solo artist. Michael?s duet with Aretha Franklin, I Know You Were Waiting (For Me), hit the Billboard Hot 100 and the U.K. Singles Chart. Since becoming a solo artist, George has become very successful and popular. In 1988, George Michael received a Grammy for Best R&B Performance Duo or Group with Vocal. Since he started his solo career, George Michael has released 10 albums, his most recent being Twenty Five, which was released in 2006.
