The Little Mermaid: Behind the Scenes
Following in the footsteps of the stage musical
Beauty & the Beast, The Little Mermaid has been brought to life by Disney Theatrical.
Because the majority of the story takes place underwater in an elaborate kingdom, the set had to be, according to the director, “translucent, take light beautifully, and [be] architectural and sculptural to suggest an underwater world.” Also to aid the performers in creating an underwater allusion, they wear wheel-heeled footwear to suggest a floating and swimming motion.

The musical had a tryout in Denver, Colorado in 2007 and opened in January 2008 in Broadway’s Lunt-Fontanne Theatre.
The plot differs from the film in many ways. To name a few, Ursula is King Triton’s sister, Prince Eric’s dog, Max, isn’t included, and instead of Ursula posing as Vanessa- Prince Eric holds a singing contest (a la Cinderella) for foreign princesses to see if any match Ariel’s voice.
