Central Michigan Chippewas football has been part of Mount Pleasant, Michigan since 1896, growing from a teachers’ college team into a Mid-American Conference force. The Chippewas captured the 1974 NCAA Division II national championship, then stacked MAC titles in 1979, 1980, 1994, 2006, 2007 and 2009, with memorable bowl wins including the 2006 Motor City, 2009 GMAC, 2012 Little Caesars Pizza and 2021 Sun Bowl. Alumni like No. 1 NFL Draft pick Eric Fisher and record-setting quarterback Dan LeFevour still loom large.

Home Saturdays at Kelly/Shorts Stadium crackle with the "Fire Up Chips" chant, a loud student section, and tailgates that start early and run right up to kickoff. The annual clash with Western Michigan for the Victory Cannon and the chase for the Michigan MAC Trophy keep the rivalry heat high every fall.
