Yankee Stadium is home to the New York Yankees. It began construction in 1921 and opened its gates in 1923. Yankee Stadium stood proud without much change until the 1960’s when a mediocre baseball team and exciting expansion team across the way (the Mets) called for change. The Yankees began renovations in the late 60’s and much discussion of what to do with the historic ballpark, led to the team signed a 30-year lease with New York City, which led to the stadium being closed from 1973 to 1976. The Yankees were forced to move to Shea stadium for 2 years while Yankee Stadium was “modernized.”
When the gates did reopen in 1976, it took on some significant changes. The steel columns that supported the second and third decks were removed, along with some other identifiable trademarks being removed; a 560-foot scoreboard was built along the bleachers. The scoreboard would be the first with a telescreen, which allowed instant replay to be shown to fans throughout the stadium. The stadium can hold a capacity crowd of just under 60,000. This will be the last year of the historic stadium, as construction began in 2006 for the new Yankee stadium and is expected to be completed in 2009. The 2008 All Star Game will take place as Yankee Stadium.
