Top Five College Football Matchups of the 2024 Season

Fans everywhere are gearing up for what may be one of the most exciting college football seasons ever, thanks to the expanded playoff structure. While college football fans are excited to watch their favorite team play, there are a few games that rise above the excitement of all others. Here are the top 5 biggest college football games this season, according to Vivid Seats data.
The Texas-Texas A&M rivalry game is finally back. They played each other every year from 1915 to 2011, until Texas A&M left the Big 12 to move to the SEC in 2012. Now that Texas has joined the SEC, the historic rivalry game can resume. Fans have been missing this game for the last 13 years and are ready to get their hands on the hottest ticket of the college football season. The Longhorns dominate the all-time series 76-37-5, but the Aggies will seek to spoil their fun in the return of the “Lone Star Showdown.”
Army and Navy first played each other in 1890 and have since become one of college football’s most storied rivalries. Since 1930, the two service academies have faced off each year in December, marking the end of college football’s regular season. This long-lasting rivalry game is the final contest in the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy series, which also includes the Air Force Academy Falcons. Navy leads the all-time series by seven wins, but Army looks to close the gap some more after winning the previous two years.
2024 marks only the second time in history that the Longhorns and Wolverines will face off. If this game is anything like the last one, fans are in for a nail-biter. In the 2005 Rose Bowl, Texas won 38-37 after kicking a field goal as time expired to give them the win. Texas will be the first ranked opponent Michigan will face coming off of their National Championship win last season. With both teams in the top 10 of the AP Preseason Poll, this Rose Bowl rematch is poised to be an entertaining one.
Texas has a new slate of opponents this year after moving to the SEC, and one of the most exciting games will be against Georgia. The two football powerhouses have only played once in the last 40 years. They played each other in the Sugar Bowl in 2019 and Texas won 28-21, which led to the well-known video of Sam Ehlinger declaring that Texas is “back.” However, Georgia is the one who has been “back” since then, winning back-to-back championships in 2021 and 2022. With Georgia ranked #1 in the AP preseason poll and Texas ranked #4, fans will be in for a treat in Week 8.
The “Red River Rivalry” is one of the biggest rivalries in all of college football. The two teams first played each other in 1900 and since 1929, they have played annually. Texas leads the all-time series 63-51-5, but Oklahoma has been dominating in recent years. Since 2000, the Sooners are 17-8 against the Longhorns, largely thanks to Oklahoma’s three Heisman winning quarterbacks during that time. We’ll see who takes home the Golden Hat in the teams’ first year as members of the SEC.
