An American in Paris Enjoys Successful Broadway Debut in 2015
Although An American in Paris has long been one of the most beloved movie musicals in the U.S., it took more than half a century for the adored Gene Kelly film to make the jump to the Broadway stage. In 2015, An American in Paris finally began its previews at New York’s Palace Theatre on March 13, a month ahead of its official opening date of April 12, and since that time the show has been one of the biggest stage successes of the season. The musical features some of the best-loved compositions of legendary songwriting team George and Ira Gershwin, including “They Can’t Take That Away From Me” and “I’ve Got Rhythm,” and its current cast includes professional ballet dancer Robert Fairchild as Jerry Mulligan and Broadway veteran Jill Paice as Milo Davenport. As of May 26, the musical is expected to continue as an open run indefinitely.
In addition to receiving acclaim from audiences, An American in Paris has been a smash hit with critics. The show earned a total of 12 nominations for the Tony Awards 2015 ceremony, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Direction of a Musical for Christopher Wheeldon, among others.
