Jingle Ball 2014
On Dec. 3 DJ Earworm dropped the seventh edition of his popular United State of Pop series, mashing up 25 popular songs of 2014 into an impressive four-minute video. But before there was DJ Earworm, there were Jingle Ball concerts, which have been working off the same concept for nearly two decades. The annual radio shows collect the year’s top pop artists in arenas across the U.S. for one fast-paced evening of performances in each city. Though it varies from venue to venue, the Jingle Ball 2014 lineup has booked the hottest artists of the year—Taylor Swift, One Direction, Ariana Grande, Jason Derulo, Iggy Azalea, and more—for its array of December concerts.
It’s no coincidence that there’s a high crossover rate between the DJ Earworm 2014 mix and the Jingle Ball lineup. So far in 2014, just 14 artists have clinched the No. 1 slot on the Billboard Hot 100, and nearly all of those caught the attention of both Jingle Ball and DJ Earworm. You can watch his full mash-up for 2014 below, and then prepare to see the closest thing to a live version with Jingle Ball tickets from our marketplace.
Leading the pack of said crossover artists is Pharrell, whose “Happy” topped the Hot 100 for 10 consecutive weeks in the spring, the most of any artist all year. The big-hatted performer will take the stage for at least four Jingle Ball concerts this season, including the biggest shows in Los Angeles (Dec. 5) and New York (Dec. 12). Meghan Trainor and Iggy Azalea—who both feature prominently in the DJ Earworm 2014 mash-up and are booked for nearly every Jingle Ball show—led the Hot 100 chart for eight and seven weeks, respectively, with their multi-Platinum singles “All About That Bass” and “Fancy.”
Of course, any discussion of pop music in 2014 wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Taylor Swift, who will headline Jingle Ball in L.A. and New York ahead of her massive 1989 World Tour launch next spring. Swift has held the No. 1 slot on the Hot 100 for seven non-consecutive weeks with “Shake It Off” and “Blank Space” from her first official pop album, 1989. On top of being the first and only album to be certified Platinum in 2014, 1989 has reached an astounding 2.5 million in sales, beating every other album released this year by at least one million copies.
Other artists that made the cut for Jingle Ball and the DJ Earworm 2014 mix include Ariana Grande, One Direction, MAGIC!, Jason Derulo, Jessie J, Sam Smith, Charli XCX, and Lil Jon. Maroon 5 also made it into the mix, but the band will only appear at Jingle Ball New York before its worldwide tour begins next February. Breakout Irish singer-songwriter Hozier also made the cut for DJ Earworm. While he won’t be at Jingle Ball 2014, he is returning to the U.S. next year with his own solo tour.
DJ Earworm has been making his annual United State of Pop mash-ups since 2007, and each megamix of the year’s top songs has become an instant hit. The latest DJ Earworm 2014 track, dubbed “Do What You Wanna Do,” racked up more than two million views in its first 24 hours.
