6 Little Things to Know Before You Go To the 2017 Kentucky Derby
A record 170,513 Kentucky Derby tickets were sold in 2016, making it one of the largest sporting events in the country in terms of attendance, surpassing the Super Bowl, the World Series, or the NCAA Final Four. While you have probably planned your dandy Derby wardrobe and other important aspects of your weekend at Churchill Downs, don’t let the little details spoil your big trip. Following are six little-known tips to make your Derby an unforgettable experience:
The world's most legendary racetrack is tech-savvy - To get a lay of the land, download the Churchill Downs Racing app. The app will help you keep track of races, skip food lines and find your seat.
You can’t take it with you - For security reasons, there are a number of items not allowed in the facility including purses larger than 12 inches, cameras, camcorders, laptops, backpacks, umbrellas and coolers.
Cash is king - Despite its many modern amenities and services, the track does not uniformly accept credit cards. Bring lots of cash – more than you think you will need – to cover parking, drinks, betting and more. While there are ATMs at the track, you probably don’t want to spend your time waiting in line at one of them.
Know the lingo - The locals refer to the event simply as "Derby," dropping the word “the.” To blend in like a native, say things like, “What time will you arrive at Derby?" and "Do you have a hat to wear to Derby?” It is acceptable to say “the Derby” when discussing the race itself (i.e., “Who do you think will win the Derby?”)
Celebrate “Thurby” - For a real insider experience, head to Louisville on the Thursday before Derby to enjoy Thurby. As the Kentucky Oaks has gained popularity and attracted more crowds, Thurby has emerged as Louisville's day at the races. Natives of Louisville flock to Thurby for great horse racing, bourbon, and music encompassing a special day to celebrate life in Kentucky.
