CFP Rankings
In the first of seven rankings set to be released ahead of the inaugural College Football Playoff, the designated selection committee unveiled on Oct. 28 its first-ever top 25. Though the final determination won’t be made until early December, for now, the committee’s top four teams in order are Mississippi State, Florida State, Auburn, and Ole Miss.
If the seeding remains the same, the first-ever College Football Playoff would feature an Egg Bowl rematch in the Sugar Bowl semifinal, pitting No. 1 Mississippi State against No. 4 Ole Miss on New Year’s Day at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans. Meanwhile, the Jan. 1 Rose Bowl semifinal in Pasadena also would set up another intriguing rematch, this time of the final BCS Championship that featured No. 2 Florida State vs No. 3 Auburn.
Of course, plenty more games still remain, including a regular-season Egg Bowl showdown between the Bulldogs and Rebels in a game that could very well serve to determine how the final College Football Playoff rankings shake out.
In regards to the current status of other major bowl games outside of the playoff, No. 5 Oregon and No. 9 Kansas State would face off in the Fiesta Bowl, No. 6 Alabama would take on No. 21 in the Orange Bowl, No. 7 TCU and No. 8 Michigan State would meet in the Cotton Bowl, and No. 10 Notre Dame and No. 23 East Carolina would be paired up in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.
