Only a lucky few make it to the big leagues of the stand-up comedy circuit.
They have the guts, grit (and a true gift) to make sold-out audiences laugh, and that’s why the talents and accomplishments of the funny women taking the stages across the country are worth celebrating.
From standup veterans like Tina Fey and Amy Poehler to recent comedy breakouts such as Nikki Glasser, we’ve rounded up the most popular female comedians in each state in honor of Women’s History Month.

From the West Coast to the East Coast, different comedians and their comedic styles have taken root in different regions. The East Coast loves New York native Amy Schumer, Leanne Morgan and Taylor Tomlinson; the West Coast cherishes a variety of comedians including Ali Wong, Chelsea Handler and Illiza Shlesinger.
Knoxville comedian Leanne Morgan dominates the comedy scene in the South. In 2023, she is embarking on her “Just Getting Started” tour and, of course, is making a two-night stop in her hometown. On the “Just Getting Started” tour, fans can expect Leanne Morgan to share stories of her life, family and experiences with her fans—or as she calls them, her best friends.
Illinois loves Tina Fey, which comes as no surprise considering she got her start in the Chicago improv scene in the 1990s. Starting in the spring of 2023, Tina Fey and her longtime friend Amy Poehler are officially launching their first, joint live comedy tour, aptly named “Amy Poehler and Tina Fey: Restless Leg tour.” The first female co-anchors of “Weekend Update” on “Saturday Night Live” are set to hit four major U.S. cities: Washington, D.C., Chicago, Boston and Atlantic City.
Taylor Tomlinson checks in as the most popular female comedian in Kansas, Minnesota, Ohio, Rhode Island, and Virginia. The stand-up comedian finds herself in the midst of her “Have It All” tour, which is her biggest run of live performances yet.
The map features 10 different female comedians, but there are so many other delighting crowds across the country.
Wanda Sykes went from working for the NSA to making Entertainment Weekly’s 25 Funniest People in America. The comedian and actor has brought her distinctive vocal tones to some of the most popular animated films and television shows like “Ice Age: Collision Course”, “Rio”, “HBO’s Animals” and more. Wanda Sykes has remained busy over the years and takes the stand-up stage every so often, with a single March 18 show scheduled for the Cowlitz Ballroom in Washington State.
Tiffany Haddish is another talented comic we love. Her star power has risen steadily over the last few years with appearances in everything from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” to long-time fan favorite, “Girls Trip.” She made history as the first Black female comic to host “Saturday Night Live”—and she won an Emmy for it too. You’ll want to get tickets to see Tiffany Haddish live this year.
