White Worn By 70% of US Open Golf Winners Since 1985

June 11, 2015 by Amy

US Open Golf Trends

Golf has long been known for its deep commitment to history, tradition, and, of course, fashion. From the late great Payne Stewart to current world top-10 competitor Rickie Fowler, many of the sport's finest athletes over the years have been none too shy about making a fashion statement or two.

While donning something outrageous can help generate headlines, a simple shade of white may be just the ticket when it comes to US Open glory. Taking a look at US Open golf winners over the past 30 years, the results heavily favor those who have opted to wear white (polo, hat, or both).

Since 1985:
*21 of 30 US Open winners have worn white on the tournament's final day
*16 wore a white hat
*14 wore a white polo
*9 wore both

The trend remains prevalent ahead of the 2015 US Open, as seven of the last 10 winners alone won while wearing white hats, including last year’s champion, Martin Kaymer.

So, what about the rest? After white, the second-most popular polo color amongst winners is red, which was the choice shade for three-time champion, Tiger Woods (2000, 2002, 2008), as well as Curtis Strange (1989) and Payne Stewart (1991, 1999), while different variations of blue also has been the choice color on occasion.

In terms of hats, only white (16 winners), black (6), and blue (4) have made appearances, and in the case of winners Curtis Strange (1988, 1989), Andy North (1985), and Hale Irwin (1990), nothing was worn at all.

Meanwhile, visor enthusiasts should take note, as only two US Open golf winners have prevailed while wearing one: Tom Kite (1992) and Raymond Floyd (1986).

Just for fun:
In addition to the aforementioned trends, one other item of note was discovered. During the same 30-year time period, only two US Open winners had mustaches when they won the tournament, Scott Simpson (1987) and Corey Pavin (1995).
