The Kansas City Chiefs are not only one of the most accomplished NFL teams in recent years, they are also No. 1 with the fans.
As the 2023-24 NFL season is set to kick off, new data from Vivid Seats explores America’s rooting interests by identifying the most popular NFL team in each county.
Chiefs Kingdom isn’t restricted to just Kansas City. The Chiefs claim 292 counties and have a strong presence of fans in Missouri, Nebraska and southern Illinois.
It’s clear that there’s no shortage of passionate fan bases following top teams across the NFL. To find the top NFL team in your county, according to 2022 Vivid Seats NFL ticket data, view the interactive map below:
America’s Team Defends Its Turf
The Cowboys have a unique history cultivating a fan base: Their introductions on broadcasts as “America’s Team” in the late 70s and early 80s helped them foster a fan base across the country.
Their storied history—coupled with their eight Super Bowl appearances in the late 20th century—leaves the Cowboys as the second most popular NFL team in the country.
In total, 287 counties favor the Cowboys. The Cowboys dominate the Houston Texans across the Lone Star State, and have strong claims to territory in Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Mexico, as well as Louisiana parishes near the border.
Eagles Move West
After the Philadelphia Eagles trip to the 2023 Super Bowl, Philly fans pushed westward towards Black and Gold county, claiming 25 counties in the state. Steeler Nation is close behind at 23 counties. The Buffalo Bills also claim six counties along the Pennsylvania-New York border.
NorCal vs. SoCal
From the MLB to the NHL, NorCal and SoCal have their fair share of intra-state sports rivalries. In the NFL, the San Francisco 49ers dominate California with 45 counties rooting for the Red and Gold. The Los Angeles Chargers gained a big SoCal county, bringing their count of counties to 6.
Raider Nation Takes a Stand
Since the Raiders made their debut at Allegiant Stadium in 2020, the Sagebrush State is a lot more silver and black.
However, the 49ers haven’t lost their hold over the western part of Nevada. They even occupied the crowd for their 2023 New Year’s Day game against the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium, according to Vivid Seats Fan Forecast™.
Mixed Up Mountain Lands
The counties making up Idaho, Montana and Utah have an eclectic NFL rooting interest (and no NFL team of their own).
Take Lemhi County in Idaho, for example. The top team there? The Tennessee Titans. To its immediate west, Valley County favors the Philadelphia Eagles. These are sparsely populated counties, located a flight away from any major NFL franchises. No team has a particularly strong foundation of support.
Divided Loyalties
The Cleveland Browns have typically been the “dominant” fan base in Ohio.
In 2023, that statement still rings true. Forty-four counties in Ohio root for the Browns and 39 counties root for the Bengals.
While the Browns and Bengals have the strongest footing in the state, the Detroit Lions and Pittsburgh Steelers also claim counties in The Buckeye State.
