For the first time in 16 years, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats will return to Broadway in 2016. The new production is set to begin previews at the Neil Simon Theatre on July 14, with an official opening date of Aug. 2.
Cats Broadway’s original director, Trevor Nunn, is already on board to return at the helm of the new production. As of Jan. 21 a full cast for the Cats revival is still pending, but the show is expected to have an open run at this iconic Broadway theater. Cats will replace the 2015 magic production, The Illusionists, when it arrives this summer.
Hamilton Choreographer to Lend Talents to Cats Broadway Return
The Cats musical revival will feature brand new choreography from one of the hottest names in Broadway today, Andy Blankenbuehler. The Tony-winning choreographer’s most notable recent work is featured in Hamilton, Lin Manuel-Miranda’s smash Broadway hit. Blankenbeuhler was also the choreographer for Manuel-Miranda’s In the Heights and the 2012 revival of Annie.
Other Broadway Revivals 2016 Include Fiddler on the Roof, The Color Purple
Although they technically opened in 2015, Fiddler on the Roof and The Color Purple are both expected to be open on Broadway for the rest of the year. The two beloved musicals are guaranteed to be huge hits during their returns to the stage.
Fiddler on the Roof’s star, Danny Burnstein, has been praised for his performance of the show’s beloved patriarch. Meanwhile, The Color Purple has earned rave reviews thanks to Jennifer Hudson, who’s making her Broadway debut as the musical’s sultry singer, Shug Avery.
