How Well Did How-Old Guess the Ages of These Famous Rock Stars?

May 01, 2015 by Amy

How-Old.Net Rock Star Ages

In most social situations, the question, ‘How old do I look?’ often feels like a trap. But now, thanks to Microsoft, you can avoid all the awkwardness as the software company debuted How-Old.net yesterday, and the website’s age-detecting facial recognition technology has the Internet in a frenzy. So how do your favorite music stars stack up against the test of time? We used 10 photos of some of today’s biggest stars to get a median age from the How-Old robot, and some of the results were…unbelievable, to say the least.

When you’re done scoping out the results, don’t forget to buy concert tickets and see if these stars really pull off their ages in person during an upcoming show.

Mick Jagger and Keith Richards
How-Old.Net Median Ages: 55 and 59.5 | Actual Ages: 71
The Rolling Stones have been together for more than half a century, and according to Microsoft, all those years on the road have been good to band leaders Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Both are actually 71, but the How Old Robot decided Jagger on average looks like a 55-year-old, while Richard’s gray hair and wrinkles pushed him up to 59.5 years (very generous, in our opinion). At this rate, fans of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame veterans should be able to look forward to at least two more decades of tours from the “fresh-faced” rock stars.

Paul McCartney
How-Old.Net Median Age: 62.5 | Actual Age: 72
“Will you still need me, will you still feed me when I’m 64?” That’s what Paul McCartney asked us on “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” back in 1967, and almost 50 years later, it’s clear the world still loves this spry 72-year-old. Maybe it’s because McCartney’s face makes him look like he’s just shy of 63? Whatever the case, he continues to sell out stadiums around the globe--the real testament to the former Beatle’s enduring popularity.

Taylor Swift
How-Old.Net Median Age: 24 | Actual Age: 25
The “red lip classic thing” is definitely a timeless look, and the iconic pop star is maintaining her youth well these days. The How Old Robot gave Taylor Swift a median age of 24--very fitting, considering the “Shake It Off” singer just celebrated her 25th birthday in December. All that youthful energy will prove helpful for her upcoming 1989 World Tour, set to kick off next week in Tokyo with a whopping 78 concerts scheduled through the end of the year.

Garth Brooks
How-Old.Net Median Age: 44 | Actual Age: 53
The trusty cowboy hat appears to be the key to looking young for country music star, Garth Brooks. The legend's signature look appears to have contributed greatly in producing a median age of 44, nine years shy of his actual age of 53.

One Direction
While How-Old.net was nearly spot-on with fellow 20-something Taylor Swift, the boys of One Direction couldn't quite catch a break. Of the remaining four, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, and Liam Payne are all currently 21, while Louis Tomlinson is 23, but the quartet instead registered a median age of at least seven years older. Styles' checked in at 28.5, followed by Horan and Payne at 30.5, and Tomlinson appeared 10 years older than his actual age, posting 33. Garth Brooks' cowboy hat may have been the key to his looking younger, but for 1D, their facial hair and more serious poses seemed to have the opposite effect for the How-Old robot.
