Esports Surpassing Traditional Entertainment?
Overwatch League appears to be blossoming into the next mainstream spectator sport.
On Thursday, parent company Blizzard announced a deal with Disney/ESPN to televise Overwatch League. Fans’ appetite to also watch in person is manifesting in ticket prices.
Vivid Seats’ ticket price data shows that the “get-in” listed price for the Overwatch League Grand Finals, on Saturday, July 28 at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, currently starts at $152—higher than the minimum price to see more traditional sports and concert entertainment, including Phil Collins, Drake, and WWE SummerSlam.
Tickets to the second round of the Overwatch League playoffs, held the prior weekend in Burbank, Calif., show that Overwatch is a hot ticket on the West Coast as well. Tickets start at $55—more than it will cost to see rapper Logic perform at the nearby L.A. Forum on the same night.
