Rock in Rio 2015 Lineup Offers Two Weekends of Rock and Pop Greats

January 19, 2015 by Alyssa

Rock in Rio Lineup

Las Vegas will be getting another new music festival in 2015 when the first American installment of Rock in Rio heads to Sin City for two weekends in May. Last September, the organizers had already tabbed major acts like Metallica and Taylor Swift for the two weekends of rock (May 8-9) and pop (May 15-16). Now, with the festival just four months away, more notable names are filling in the gaps to build one of the most impressive festival lineups of the year.

No Doubt, Metallica to Usher in First Weekend of Rock in Rio 2015
It’s been 20 years since No Doubt released its first chart-topping album, 1995’s “Tragic Kingdom,” and the band will be celebrating its legacy this year as the first headliner on the Rock in Rio 2015 lineup. On May 8, the ska outfit will close the festival’s first Friday night, following earlier sets from acts like Gary Clark Jr. and Bleachers.

Rock in Rio’s first weekend is packed with many veteran and up-and-coming rock acts, but it’ll be frequent Rock in Rio headliner Metallica that brings the weekend to a close on May 9. The heavy metal icons have performed at Rock in Rio in Brazil twice, most recently in 2013.

Supporting acts for May 9, the final day of the festival’s rock weekend, include a strong showing of modern rock’s biggest names, including Linkin Park, Coheed and Cambria, Deftones, and more.

Rock in Rio 2015’s Pop Weekend Helmed by Taylor Swift and Bruno Mars
This year, Rock in Rio will become of the first U.S. festivals to focus exclusively on mainstream pop during its second weekend (May 15-16). The first night will feature Taylor Swift, just a few days before she officially launches her 1989 World Tour. A slew of female solo acts will join headliner Swift on Friday, including Jessie J, Charli XCX, Tove Lo, and more. Swift’s Red Tour opening act, Ed Sheeran, will also appear on the main stage on May 15.

Bruno Mars will close the final night of Rock in Rio 2015 on May 16. The singer hasn’t dropped a single of his own since 2013, but as of Jan. 19, his name appears at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 as guest vocalist on Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk.” Sam Smith will also bring his powerful vocals to the last night of the festival after being added to the Rock in Rio lineup on Jan. 13.
