Baseball has always been much more than just a game in the United States. As John S. Bowman and Joel Zoss, this game is part of the fabric of American culture; it is the common social ground between strangers, a world of great possibilities and of chance. Baseball is an old American tradition known fro its rich legends, amazing history, and folklore; it is a never-ending story, where every match is a new 9-inning chapter and where each player has the chance to become the hero. Through the centuries, each team has had its share of superstar baseball players that stand out above all the rest. They are the ones who bring thousands of fans out to the ballpark and only the All-Star Game brings them all together at once.
The MLB All-Star Game is popularly known as the “Midsummer Classic”. It is a baseball game held annually between players from the NL (National League) and the AL (American League). The All-Star Game is typically held in early to mid-July marking the halfway point in the MLB season. Since 2003 the game has been used to determine home field advantage for the World Series.
The 1st ML All-Star Game was played on July 6, 1933, at Comiskey Park in Chicago, Illinois. It was held at the insistence of Arch Ward, who was a sports editor for the Chicago Tribune. The date coincided with the celebration of the city’s Century of Progress Exposition. Originally intended to be a one-time event, the game’ great success resulted in making the All-Star game an annual one. Arch Ward's contribution was recognized by MLB in 1962, when the "Arch Ward Trophy" was created. Every year, it was given to the All-Star Game's most valuable player. For more that 73 years now, the “Midsummer Classic” has remained a fan favorite game featuring the top talents in this great sport.
Originally, All-Star teams were chosen by the managers and baseball fans for the 1933 and 1934 games. From 1935 and for the next ten years, managers chose the entire team for each league. From 1947 through 1957, fans selected the team's starters and the manager selected the pitchers and the remaining players. Starting from 1958 and until 1969, managers, coaches, and players made the All-Star Team selections. Only in 1970, the vote returned to the fans, who until now select the starters for each team.
