The MLB instituted the Wild Card concept to the MLB Playoffs in 1994, allowing one non-division winner in each league to qualify for the playoffs based on best overall record.
Multiple Wild Card teams won the World Series following its inception:
The success of the Wild Card prompted Major League Baseball to expand the Wild Card format in 2012. Instead of a lone WIld Card winner facing off against the lowest-seeded divisional winner in the ALDS and NLDS series, MLB expanded to add two Wild Card teams who would meet in a single, winner-takes-all game for the right to advance to the divisional round.
In 2022, the MLB debuted Wild Card Series, where three wild card teams and the lowest-seeded division winner in the NL and AL square off with the chance to advance to the their respective NLCS and ALDS rounds.
The Wild Card round is divided into four series:
Both NL Wild Card tickets and AL Wild Card tickets are available on Vivid Seats.
NL and AL Wild Card tickets typically cost less than divisional round and championship round tickets.
The NL Wild Card series will feature the No. 3 St. Louis Cardinals vs. No. 6 Philadelphia Phillies, and the No. 4 New York Mets vs. No. 5 San Diego Padres.
The AL Wild Card series will feature the No. 3 Cleveland Guardians vs. No. 6 Tampa Bay Rays, and the No. 4 Toronto Blue Jays vs. No. 5 Seattle Mariners.
NL and AL Wild Card tickets will be available for all Wild Card series, which will run Oct. 7-9. The top-seeded team in each series will host all three games.
